This house is part of the Myilly Point Heritage Precinct in Darwin. It is a unique and related group of pre-war houses built for executive level public servants, illustrating several designs of the notable architect B.C.G. Burnett. The precinct makes a strong contribution to an understanding of Darwin’s architectural and social history.
Burnett House was completed in 1939 and allocated to the NT Director of Works. It is the only surviving example of a Type ‘K’ house - an unusual design which incorporated an entrance lobby and lounge/dining room at ground level, and bedrooms above.
The house suffered damage during World War Two and as a result of Cyclone Tracy in 1974. In 1989 restoration work was completed on behalf of the National Trust, and the house named Burnett House after its designer. Within a beautiful garden setting, the house now operates as a museum.
