The Alice Springs Telegraph Station symbolises the first centre of European settlement in the central Australian region. The station was an essential part of the Overland Telegraph Line which was a significant development in Australia that brought the country in from its isolation from the world by providing rapid communications with Britain. The first message to Adelaide was sent from the Station in January 1872. In 1932 the Telegraph Station closed, and the site then served for many years as a home to Aboriginal children. In 1963 it was declared a National Park.

The site includes a number of stone walled buildings, including the Station Master’s Residence, Barracks, Post & Telegraph Office, Battery Room, Blacksmith’s Shop, and Buggy Shed. The reserve also acts as an important refuge for flora and fauna.
